Aim of pranayama is to stop the desiring mind and bring about the latent divinity in the body which is dwelling as pure consciousness.
Pranayama removes subtle obstructions formed by attachments.
When breath is restrained after exhalation this is sahita kumbhaka and it is a “managed” retention; here speech, perception and hearing are controlled.
The CHITTA; ( space in which mental force occurs) becomes free from passion, hatred, greed, lust, pride and envy.
With practice of managing the retention the body becomes a sacrificial alter where the attachtments are consumed in the inner fire when there is kumbhaka.
The student experiences this knowledge and pranayama becomes part of their wisdom and so eventually the wisdom (buddhi), becomes sacrificed aswell as the Self to absolute surrender and this is a spontaneous kumbhaka known as kevala kumbhaka.
The yogi is then absorbed in adoration of pure consciousness/bliss.
Om Shanti
